Primary Objective
To create a series of interlinked cycling and walking tracks along the Castledoyle Road precinct SE of Armidale, to enhance road safety, provide a safe place to engage in cycling and walking recreation, encourage active transport commuting and to attract tourism.
The Project Components
What?

Stage 1: Gungurru Gaitway
An approximate 6km combined cycling / walking circuit from Waterfall Way up Castledoyle Road (2kms), down Dances Lane (stock route – walkers only) to Waterfall Way (1.5kms) and rejoining Castledoyle Road (2.5kms).
Dedicated off-road cycle/walking track along Castledoyle Road to extend to Mays Road intersection.
Why?
Castledoyle Road is a popular cycling route but is becoming more dangerous as traffic volumes increase as a result of increased commercial activity further out on Castledoyle Road.
-
The road is especially dangerous for the first 2-3 kms from town because the road is narrow, has little or no shoulders, and is characterised by a number of blind curves and a blind crest.
-
At the same time the recent drop in speed to 80kph has not slowed down all traffic. A dedicated track off road for the first 2-3kms would enhance road safety, encourage recreational use, and also provide a safe commuting route for residents along Castledoyle Road, especially from lifestyle blocks.
How?
We aim to encourage Armidale Regional Council to consider taking up such a project as part of its updated "Active Transport Strategy”(2023-4).
-
Castledoyle Road as a future cycling trail expansion corridor had been previously identified in Council’s Bicycle Strategy 2012 as a proposed “Scenic Class Cycleway Route”.
-
Provision of cycleways and bicycle paths are also highlighted in the NENW (New England North West) Regional Plan 2041 and Council’s Advancing our Region Community Plan 2022-2032
When?
The project would be dependent upon funding from State and/or Federal Government. If Council accepts such a project , they could apply for funding when appropriate funding programs become available.
Outcomes?
-
Increased recreational infrastructure / recreational activity.
-
Increased cycling commuting.
-
Improved road safety.
-
Improved health outcomes / benefits: Reduced childhood obesity.\
-
Enhanced attractiveness for potential tree changers with young families.
-
Increased tourism visitation and expenditure.
